Two friends sat in a cafe. One animatedly discussed the latest political drama, while the other constantly refreshed his investment app, tracking the surge of his stocks.
Their conversation, although mundane, highlighted a subtle reality: both were deeply influenced, maybe even controlled, by something larger than themselves.
Religion, politics, money.
Vices like food, sex, drugs, and alcohol.
Noble pursuits, such as family and purpose, aren't exempt either.
When something dominates your attention, becomes your primary focus, it has become your god.
It's what you rearrange your life for. You make sacrifices for it. Your thoughts dance to its rhythm.
The individual sidelining a dream to climb a corporate ladder.
The parent sacrificing personal identity to mold a child's path.
They all have their gods.
But what about you?
What silently guides your choices? What drives your sacrifices?
Here's the insight:
It's not about shunning these gods or suppressing desires. It's about conscious choice.
First, recognize. Identify what holds undue influence over you.
"Why does this dominate my decisions?"
Then, if necessary, recalibrate. Not with disdain, but deliberate intent.
Outside influences are ever-present. But they shouldn't puppeteer your every move.
Eleanor Roosevelt once wisely noted, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
So, who's pulling your strings?
Realize this: Your choices, passions, and pursuits — they are uniquely yours.
Control them. Own them.
Because in the end, the only influence that should truly shape your journey is the one you consciously choose.
