We hail heroes who multitask. Who somehow handle a million things at once with seeming ease.
But behind closed doors, even superstars struggle to split focus effectively.
Meanwhile, villains desist from dividing attention. They channel energy into single-minded pursuit of priority goals. Without getting sidetracked trying to satisfy every demand made of them.
Trying to multitask doesn't make you a hero - it makes you average. Mediocre output across a range of tasks rather than world class execution of any.
Excellence emerges from absolute absorption in the vital few objectives - not botched efforts at everything deemed "urgent."
So maybe it's time to take a page from villains' playbooks. From their ruthless focus on furthering number one at the occasional expense of others objectives.
It may feel selfish - but ironically, protecting space for mono-focused work ultimately allows us to better meet all stakeholder needs.
Just not simultaneously.
Villains don't believe in work-life balance. They tilt decisively towards domination in their particular domain.
And because singular pursuits consume their schedules, the output tends to be far superior to anything business-as-usual types churn out through divided attention.
The dark side's obsession fuels sharp competitive edges. While sanitized "heroic" notions of multitasking dull them. Spread us thin.
Transactional in trying to keep all plates spinning, we miss the transformational change true focus brings.
So to unleash your inner supervillain, quit context switching. Zero in on one make-or-break priority with maniacal consistency before moving to another.
The results may surprise you - and inspire some heroes to turn towards the dark side too.
